Keep Trucking
A profile of Wyatt Briggs, paver operator, A-Rock Asphalt
Portrait of Wyatt Briggs in Las Vegas, Nevada at ConExpo 2026. Shot on 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 film with Leica R6.2.
Wyatt Briggs got into asphalt the way a lot of things happen in life, not by plan, but by family.
"My mom ended up finding a husband and started working for him."
That was about eight or nine years ago, shortly after high school. Now Wyatt works alongside his stepdad and his brother, paving roads and parking lots in and around the Salt Lake Valley.
"It's a family company and it's one of my favorite things."
What He Loves
Ask Wyatt what he loves most about the work and he doesn't hesitate.
"Working at different locations and being able to drive on or drive by your final product."
Most of what A-Rock Asphalt does is close to home, which means Wyatt sees his work every day, on the roads he commutes on, in the parking lots he pulls into.
"A lot of the work we do is around where we live, and so we can see that we're contributing to bettering our community and the roads that we're on and parking lots."
Ask him how it feels to drive on a bad road and he laughs. "Terrible. Especially in a dump truck. Something slightly back breaking."
His favorite thing about the industry is simpler still. "Running heavy machinery and being around that and learning that skill. It's just fun. Being able to create, roads or anything with these machines."
Can't Be a Wimp
The work is physical and the days are long. Wyatt is matter of fact about what it takes.
"Can't be a wimp. Definitely takes a strong headed person. You got to show up day after day and just push forward. Problems come. You just got to figure it out."
What he's proud of comes back to that same grind.
"I'm proud of the dedication it takes. Some jobs are easier than others, and just problem solving and grinding."
And the work has shaped him. "It's taught me a lot of hard work, long days. Some days you don't want to show up, but day by day you choose to and just keep going."
The Bigger Picture
Wyatt on why roads matter:
"That's how we move around. Without good roads, we're kind of stuck. It allows us to go see our friends, go see our family, go do all these fun things that we do, and do it safely."
As for what comes next, Wyatt's eyes are on the company.
"Hopefully just to grow this company, to scale it, make it bigger, and just continue to bring in more revenue."
But at the end of a long week, what keeps him going comes down to one thing.
"Confiding in my wife, coming home to her, just having that support system. She knows we have long days and after a long week, she's there to support me and just to help me continue to keep trucking."
Wyatt Briggs is a paver operator at A-Rock Asphalt, based in South Jordan, Utah.
